The 2019 Annual lecture will be given by Emeritus Professor John Insley, from Heidelberg University, ‘Place-names and their sources in medieval Lancashire’ on Tuesday 22 October 2019 (AGM at 6.30pm; lecture at 7.00pm) at Lancashire Archives (Bow Lane Preston, UK). John is the Lancashire editor for the English Place-Name Society. Tickets costs £5.00 each and must be purchased in advance.
Place names have had a low priority in Norwegian linguistic research over the latest decades, and Sámi place names have always been a neglected field of study in all of the Sámi area. Even so, novel methods, theories, and technology have been developed that provide exciting new possibilities for interdisciplinary and comparative studies within this field. The present conference, which will be a contribution to UNs International year of indigenous languages, aims to summarize the status quo of research and requests for more knowledge about Sámi place names in the Nordic countries and North-West Russia, as well as to suggest a multidisciplinary way forward, starting with a sosioonomastic approach to Sámi sacred place names and past and present landscape use.
Registration deadline: November 1, 2019.

The American Name Society (ANS) is inviting proposals for papers for its next annual conference. The 2020 conference will be held in conjunction with the Linguistic Society of America. Abstracts in any area of onomastic research are welcome. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is July 30, 2019. To submit a proposal, simply complete the 2020 Author Information Form.
Please email this completed form to ANS Vice President Laurel Sutton using the following address: <laurelasutton@gmail.com>. For organizational purposes, please be sure to include the phrase “ANS 2020” in the subject line of your email. Presenters who may need additional time to secure international payments and travel visas to the United States are urged to submit their proposal as soon as possible.
All proposals will be subjected to blind review. Official notification of proposal acceptances will be sent on or before September 30, 2019. All authors whose papers have been accepted must be current members of the ANS and need to register with both the ANS and the Linguistic Society of America. A two-day conference of the Lexicon of Greek Personal Names “Greek Onomastics East of the Mediterranean: Naming and Culture in the Roman Near East and the Greek Far East” will be held at the Ioannou Centre for Classical and Byzantine Studies, Oxford University, in June 28-29 2019.
Its convenors are Ted Kaizer ;Robert Parker and Jean-Baptiste Yon. Attendance is open to all without charge but those wishing to attend should please inform Robert.Parker@new.ox.ac.uk.
